Works in progress / Investments |
The Port Authority of Cartagena continue working on the development of the quays of the extension of Escombreras and improving the land accesses to these facilities, as well as completing the last development works in the land reclaimed from the sea located in the southern part. Other aims that have been achieved throughout the year are the completion of the adaptation of the tunnels on the service road, the contract signed to extend the cruise terminal and a new stretch of water main. Below is a brief summary of these works, emphasizing the following: |
QUAY IN THE MULTI-PURPOSE SOLID BULK TERMINAL IN THE NEW ESCOMBRERAS BASIN. |
The works involve the interior closing of the new basin and the construction of the last section of the quay perpendicular to the solid bulk quay. We are continuing with the works, begun in December of 2007, and have currently completed the construction of the bedding, placed 9 caissons and carried out a small part of the landfill. The works started in December 2007, has completed the implementation of the sidewalk, have been placed 9 drawers and landfills were performed. The work was completed in 2010. |

SOUTHEAST PIER HEAD IN THE NEW ESCOMBRERAS BASIN.
After several unsuccessful attempts to extend the southeast pier of the extension of Escombreras, and given the wave disturbances in the inner basin, we have decided to build the ramp at the end of the pier head by placing a caisson parallel to the current one without modifying the total length, rid eliminating the wave that runs along the inner part of the pier, providing better berthing conditions and facilitating the maneuver of vehicles along the quay. The works involve the preparation and removal of elements (defenses and bollards), removal of remaining material (land filling material, rocks, cables, remains from the demolition of the capping beam and other foreign objects) until reaching the first rubble mound bedding, discharged with a hopper carrying all in one (nucleus of rocky material) and evening out the surface with leveling gravel, anchoring a 42.60x24x29 caisson and subsequent discharge of rubble mound to complete the resistant section. After the caisson is filled and joints was sealed, we built the capping beam. The south side contains canalizations and we built two 150 T bollards (in the SW and SE corners of the new caisson), a galvanized steel ladder to provide access to the quay from auxiliary vessels and a small building for facilities. The works were completed in the second quarter of 2010. |

EXTENSION OF THE CRUISE TERMINAL ON ALFONSO XII QUAY IN THE PORT OF CARTAGENA.
The urban development and promotion of the city of Cartagena abroad is aimed mainly at the tourism industry, offering historic culture and the defensive heritage of surroundings. To a large extent, the effort put into the promotion of the region's tourism is focused on cultural tourism. To make this possible, we have considered the possibility of extending the current Cruise Terminal to a length of about 500 m., allowing the berthing of two vessels, and facilitating the simultaneous berth of several vessels on the same day. The works involve a berth platform 180 m. long and variable width, made up of a structure with Ø 1000 steel piles, crowned with prefabricated beams, on which rest alveolar tiles and a compression layer, a surface area of about 2000 m2 in the extrados of the platform and two dolphins. The works will be completed with bollards, defenses, lighting system and paving of the area. |

WATER SUPPLY IN THE EXTENSION OF ESCOMBRERAS BASIN. PHASE II. SECTIONS I and II. |
As a result of the extension of Escombreras Basin, carried out by the Port Authority of Cartagena, there will be an additional area available of 60 hectares, which will provide space for new specialized terminals and industries related to the port activity. For this reason, it is necessary the provision of a water supply system that does not interfere with the current services layout, and that guarantees the supply to the new terminals and industries that are going to establish in the extension area. It is essential to link this new area with the local distribution network, located in the roundabout intersection of the Interstate 343 with the service road Cartagena-Escombreras. For this purpose, we have begun the construction of a new ductile iron pipe Ø300 diameter that comes from the current network and links with the new networks installed in the different phases of the development works carried out in the extension of the basin. |
EXTENSION OF THE PIPE RACK TO THE PLOT IN CONCESSION TO SARAS (PHASE I AND II)
The growing land occupation of industrial establishments in El Fangal area, as well as in the Valley of Escombreras, led the Port Authority to build in 2003 a pipe rack for the transportation of products, by pipeline, from the quays of the Oil Terminal in Escombreras and its future extension to these companies, being interrupted when crossing Ribera quay. With the establishment of new facilities in the extension area (plot in concession to Saras), it is necessary to continue this pipe rack from the Ribera Quay to SARAS' facilities. This extension includes a 625 meter long rack, with overhead crossings on the Ribera quay, access to the berths of this quay, access to Bastarreche Quay, future road on the south side of the Quay's wall, railway crossing and an overhead section parallel to the exit road of the directional split roundabout. Once the development of this area is finished, the works will continue in the future until reaching Suroeste pier. |

LAND ACCESSESS. EXTENSION OF ESCOMBRERAS BASIN. SECTION IV
Since 2007 until the current time, several roads and services, are part of the development works of the extension of Escombreras Basin, have been built. The needs of the concessions and the land obtained by the filling have established the order established. The works are being carried out according to the needs of the concessions and the land obtained by the land filling. The Access Control to the Solid Bulk and Multi-Purpose Terminals, which will soon come into operation, and the works of the pipe rack in the area, require the construction of this new road. The project covers the works of two roads with two lanes each to link with these accesses. The lanes are 3.5 m wide, have 1.5 m wide shoulders and a 1.2 m wide median. A 2.5 m wide sidewalk is also planned on each side. In the roundabout area two lanes, 5 m wide, have been built. Under one of the pavements (SOUTH side) potable water, communication systems, high and low voltage electrical system and lighting distribution may already be found. The rainwater evacuation system has also been installed consisting of a special polyethylene pipe welded up to DN500 below the center part of the pavement with drains every 40 m. The rainwater system has also been extended, solving the evacuation of the water in the roundabout area, the gutters and the connections to these drains. |

BASIC PROJECT TO THE ACCESS CONTROL TO THE QUAYS IN THE SOLID BULK AND MULTI-PURPOSE TERMINALS IN THE EXTENSION OF ESCOMBRERAS BASIN |
The works of this Project mainly involve: Construction of the embankment necessary to raise the current land level (presently it is at the height of about +2.00 above sea level, until reaching a height of +4.20, similar to the main road). Construction of two access control points, one to control the entry (port police) and the other to control the exit (civil guard, customs). These two buildings will have similar dimensions to those built to access the Solid Bulk Quays. They will have a structure made of reinforced concrete, concrete floor and roof slabs, brick lattice roof and curved red ceramic tiles. Toilets will be built inside each building, featuring an exterior access door, and a facilities room in the Port Police control point. Both buildings will feature the necessary electrical installations in compliance with the Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation (REBT), the bathrooms fittings and potable water system. They will also be equipped with telephone sockets, optic fiber system and computer slot. |
