Cartagena, 1 July 2019 - Today is the first World Maritime Aids to Navigation Day (maritime signals), so the "Cartagena maritime signals” photographic exhibition has been installed in the esplanade of the Cabo de Palos lighthouse showing the eight lighthouses of the Mediterranean coast dependent on the Port Authority of Cartagena. The exhibition will remain on the lighthouse esplanade throughout the summer.

The images of photographer Angel Maciá offer a representative sample of the lighthouses of Escombreras, Cabo de Palos, Isla Hormigas, El Estacio, Águilas, Mazarrón, Portmán and Cabo Tiñoso. The vice-president, Pedro Pablo Hernandez, accompanied by the general director of the APC and a large crowd inaugurated this exhibition at 12.00 p.m., coinciding with the simultaneous lighting of lighthouses throughout Spain.

The aim of this exhibition is to make society aware of the importance and the service provided by Maritime Aids to Navigation in terms of safety and environmental matters, and photos of the flora and fauna that inhabit the Cartagena dock, by the author Javier Murcia, are also on display.

The purpose of these events is to raise awareness of the social and historical legacy of lighthouses, as well as the new challenges faced by maritime aids to navigation so as to improve the safety of navigation and maritime traffic, in an increasingly digital and changing environment, in a way that also contributes to sustainability.

Conference in the Balearic Islands by State Ports.

Palma de Mallorca hosts the event that, at international level, has served to pay tribute to the lighthouses as a maritime signal par excellence and to the Maritime Signal Technicians, the body of professionals who continue with the legacy of lighthouse keepers. It is also to show that, like all the instruments that guarantee transport safety, maritime aids are also in full technological evolution.

The IALA Council, held in December 2018 in Incheon (Republic of Korea), accepted Spain's proposal to host the central events of this celebration, and set as the motto for the event: "Marine Aids to Navigation: Successful Voyages, Sustainable Planet". At national level, State Ports has coordinated the different initiatives developed on the occasion of the World Maritime Aids to Navigation Day. Thus, in this first edition the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands and State Ports, with the collaboration of IALA, have organised a series of events in Palma de Mallorca

In Spain, our system has 4,122 navigation aids, of which 1,916 are managed by the 28 Port Authorities that cover our coasts, including 187 lighthouses.
